organic food labeling terms:
100% Organic:
Everything in the packaged product, or a single ingredient product, has to be certified organic, even the
“processing aids”.
Organic: 95% of the packaged
product, or a single ingredient product, has to be certified organic, even the “processing aids”. The remaining 5%
of the product (by weight) can be non- organic ingredients not commercially available in organic form.
Made with Organic Ingredients:
70% of the ingredients are organic. Can appear on the front of package, naming the specific ingredients. No
sulfites allowed unless it’s sulfur dioxide in wine.
This product has some organic ingredients: Contains less than
70% organic ingredients.
Certified organic: Minimum of 95% of the packaged product, or a
single ingredient product has to come from certified organic sources.
Contains organic ingredients: Contains less than 70% organic
ingredients.
Cage free: Only means that the
animals are not kept in cages.
Farm fish: The fish are raised in
pens. There are no organic standards for seafood.
Free range: The animals spend half of their lives outside.
Grass fed: Means the main food source is grass.
Natural: Means no artificial ingredients, or added colors.
